Learn Mindfulness
Research has been educating us for some years now about how the brain can be rewired from various. Traumas caused by physical illness, physical abuse, and verbal abuse, causing mental and emotional pain. The bottom line is how we approach these conditions. For example, Riding the bike story; chances are you took a few bumps, skinned knees, etc while learning to ride. But you probably got back on again and you don’t even think about it anymore.
Initial reactions to trauma can include stress from exhaustion, confusion, sadness, anxiety, agitation, numbness and dissociation. Most responses are normal in that they affect most survivors and are socially acceptable, psychologically.
Long term reactions to trauma may cause the bad stress leading us to develop PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). This becomes trauma that lasts months and years with stress triggers that bring back memories of the trauma accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions.
Stress, the good side and bad:
Acute Stress (good) can just be enough pressure to make one work harder, learn more and as a result, our brains develop more brainpower or neurons (cells)
Chronic Stress (bad)begins to tear down, brain cells are producing less productive power and we essentially shut down. If you’re doing the good kind keep doing that in moderation.
If its good: Keep working but make sure you are balancing out everything else and not letting it become compulsive or overachiever.
If it’s bad:
- Get to someone who can listen constructively and give stable, consistant support. This person should help to provide you with a plan torward recovery. For example developing a new pattern of action to your situation. Plan setting and pattern changing help give focus and groundedness.
- New patterns may mean changing friends or situations
- Write down 2 experiences that made you feel good… post them or more privatly put them on your mirror.
Physical pain and side effects to be aware of: exhaustion, loss of interest, angry all the time, negative thoughts about yourself etc. the list may go on.
Be mindful or aware of the certain people, situations that may cause you to feel more that way.
This is first step, become aware!!!!! There are many things we can do to enlighten the situation. Being a Pilates instructor has encouraged me tremendously learning the method has given me a more positive outlook and learning to teach the method has given me more of a purpose and focus.
